That’s why we just had to recreate the true essence of Casio’s patented phase distortion synthesis that made their CZ series so popular. You don’t need to understand how phase distortion works—just let your ears tell you how cool and unique it would sound in your music. A simpler kind of powerful digital synthesis
Released in 1984, the CZ-101 was Casio’s answer to the wildly popular Yamaha DX7. It was significantly less expensive and infinitely easier to program than its rival. Instead of frequency modulation, Casio’s phase distortion (PD) used various user-selected waveforms to modulate the timing of simple carrier waves at the cycle level in order to create more complex wave shapes. This simplified form of digital synthesis made it comparatively easy to perfect a wide variety of timbres spanning warm pads, natural percussion, buzzy digitalia, sci-fi effects and even analog synths. While PD could sound similar to FM, it also had a unique sonic signature all its own.

The CZ sound helped propel artists like Salt-N-Pepa, Was (Not Was), and Vince Clarke into the spotlight. Let’s add your name to the list.

When you drag a color-coded patchcord between patch points, only valid targets light up, saving you the frustration of making invalid connections that do nothing. The original Music Easel lacked a noise source, so we’ve added one to the preamp—handy for introducing rhythmic elements. We’ve also designed a feedback loop into the preamp, so you can really get things howling. Up to four-voice polyphony greatly enhances your performance capabilities, too.*

With our extensions to Buchla’s original design, you now have an even more intuitive programming experience paired with additional sonic options.
* Note that while our extreme modeling at the component level on the Buchla Easel V delivers insanely great analog sound, each voice of polyphony requires significant processing power to pull it off—approximately 20 percent of an i7 CPU per voice.

In the mid ‘60s, the Mellotron thrilled keyboardists with the ability to play tape-based recordings of actual orchestral instruments—adding its own quirky sonic character. Whether you’re conjuring the classics or creating new ones, adding this vintage sound to your music with Mellotron V is sure to make people sit up and listen. Mellotron V puts the orchestral sounds of classic art rock right in your hands—cape optional. Imagine a pre-digital world where sampling didn’t exist and the only way to incorporate orchestral realism in your music was, well, to hire an actual orchestra. Enter the Mellotron circa 1963. We’ve lovingly re-engineered it in Mellotron V for your music circa today.

What if you placed a tape playback mechanism under each key and fed each one a recording of a single orchestral instrument note? Crazy? Brilliant? Who cares! That ingenuity resulted in the Mellotron and empowered artists like The Beatles, The Moody Blues, Genesis and Yes to perform strings, brass, woodwinds and more without hiring a room full of session players. The imperfections of tape flutter and other 1960s electronics yielded a sort of alt-universe version of these traditional instruments. In today’s world of pristine sampling, that contrast has brought the “Tron” sound back into vogue at the hands of artists like Caro Emerald, Vampire Weekend and Kasabian.

Synthesize!

Then add two arbitrary-waveshape LFOs, a multi-source sample-and-hold module, and fully user-controllable MIDI assignments, with nearly every control on the panel as a destination.

Control!
Quanta is customizable to your taste and playing style. With full MPE support, it can take advantage of the extended control set of your Linnstrument, Seaboard, Soundplane, Continuum, or other MPE controller, and support for TUN files lets you use tuning tables.
